Drink coffee to tackle obesity, suggests study

Drink coffee to tackle obesity, suggests study”

"Brown fat works in a different way to other fat in your body and produces heat by burning sugar and fat, often in response to cold", said Professor Michael Symonds, from the School of Medicine at the University of Nottingham.

The research is thought to be the first of its kind to show how coffee has a direct impact on brown fat in humans, which Professor Symonds feels will have "big implications" for society.

"We have known for some time that coffee has a number of health benefits including increased fat burning, but the issue in Australia is the way we drink our coffee", Burrell said. It's distinct from white fat cells, which is where the body stores excess calories.

Increasing the activity of brown fat improves blood sugar control and also improves blood lipid levels.

Drinking a cup of coffee can stimulate brown adipose tissue (also known as brown fat), an important part of the human body which plays a key role in how quickly we can burn calories as energy, according to a study published this week in the journal Scientific Reports. This, in turn, affects the body's metabolism. Although, no precise method was found to directly trigger its activity in humans until now, adds Symonds.

"We used a sachet of Nescafé, which has about two grams of coffee powder in about 200 millilitres of water", he said.

The next step was to use high-tech imaging to track changes in brown fat stored in people's necks.

"The results were positive and we now need to ascertain that caffeine as one of the ingredients in the coffee is acting as the stimulus or if there's another component helping with the activation of brown fat", Symonds said.

The site reads: "The higher your metabolic rate, the easier it is for you to lose weight and the more you can eat without gaining weight". Always consult a specialist or your own doctor for more information. So this is a piece of good news for you for sure.

According to Dr. Donald Hensrud, medical editor of the Mayo Clinic Diet and medical director of the Mayo Clinic Healthy Living Program in Rochester, Minn., the research findings sound probable, but coffee drinkers should be cautious.

"Thus, the practical implications of this study are now small". It has found the components which could have a direct effect on "Brown Fat" present in our body. Caffeine may boost weight loss or prevent from gaining weight.

"This suggests that something other than caffeine may be responsible for this effect", he said. Now, we give you another reason to fall all the more in love with your coffee. "However, the effect of coffee on diabetes risk is much less than is weight, and coffee is not effective in treatment of diabetes".
