Expedition 59 returns from International Space Station

Expedition 59 returns from International Space Station”

Expedition 58/59 astronaut Anne McClain, Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and Canadian Space Agency astronaut David Saint-Jacques.

McClain, the NASA astronaut, and Saint-Jacques, of the Canadian Space Agency, will be wrapping up their first trips to space.

June 25 (UPI) - Two astronauts and a cosmonaut are back on Earth after 204 days aboard the International Space Station.

Mission Saint-Jacques began early on 3 December, when it was included in the crew of the "Union" after October there was a failed rocket launch, which the two astronauts had to abort the flight and make an emergency landing.

McClain, Kononenko and Saint-Jacques were optimistic ahead of their successful launch and remained upbeat throughout their time aboard the orbital lab which is seen as a rare example of cooperation between Russian Federation and the West.

Mr. Saint-Jacques is expected to spend weeks or months recovering from the after-effects of the flight, which could include blood circulation problems, muscle pains and an elongated spine that will eventually return to normal.

In the next few months, the returning crew members will undergo a number of tests, as scientists continue to study how microgravity affects the human body. During one of her spacewalks, McClain was joined by Saint-Jacques, who became only the sixth Canadian to venture outside the space station. As such, he served as commander of Expedition 59 and the return Soyuz mission.

Saint-Jacques, 49, took part in a six-and-a-half hour spacewalk in April and a "cosmic catch" of SpaceX Dragon cargo using Canadarm2 - the first time a Canadian astronaut has operated the robotic arm to perform the feat.

As soon as the departing trio's ride left the space station's docking port, Expedition 60 commenced inside ISS.

The returning trio were given a ceremonial send off Monday as they exited the ISS by Ovchinin, Hague and Nasa astronaut Christina Koch, who arrived at the lab in March on a fresh mission.

The space station's population will double in a month.

A launch on July 20th will see NASA's Drew Morgan, ESA's Luca Parmitano, and Russia's Aleksandr Skvortsov join the current ISS crew for the start of Expedition 60.
