German weather agency Deutscher Wetterdienst said Wednesday a preliminary reading showed it reached 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit in Coschen, Germany, near the Polish border.

A list of June national records that may be in play includes Austria (101.5 deg), France (106.7 deg), Germany (101.3 deg), and Switzerland (99.1 deg), as well as several others in the region.

The mercury is forecast to approach 105 degrees (40.6 Celsius) in Madrid on Friday, which would be its highest temperature ever recorded.

The transport ministry in Germany's eastern Saxony-Anhalt state said it has imposed speed limits of 100 kph or 120 kph (62 miles per hour or 75 mph) on several short stretches of highway until further notice.

Temporary speed limits have been imposed on several autobahns as a result of the heat.

Paris has taken similar precautions, banning older vehicles from entering the city for the day to limit air pollution.

Paris banned more than half of the cars - generally older, dirtier models - registered in the capital region, which has almost six million inhabitants, while the heatwave lasts.

In Paris, where more than 2,000 refugees and asylum seekers live in tents around the capital, volunteers fanned out throughout the makeshift camps to deliver water and help them cool off.

The authorities raised alerts on Wednesday (June 26) as the heatwave threatened to intensify, with temperatures heading into the 40s deg C. All over Europe is hit by a heatwave. Officials are also partnering with charities to hand out free water bottles to the homeless. "And they have access to showers".

Meteorologists say the extremely hot weather in June is due to warm air moving from Africa to Central Europe.

"This increase in heat extremes is just as is predicted by climate science as a outcome of global warming caused by the increasing greenhouse gases from burning coal, oil and gas", he added.
