Large Asteroid Will Pass By 'Close' To Earth Today!

Large Asteroid Will Pass By 'Close' To Earth Today!”

The space rock, known as 2008 KV2, is expected come within 0.0045 AU of our planet - making it a "potentially hazardous asteroid", according to NASA's Centre for Near Earth Object Studies.

The asteroid, named Psyche 16, "appears to be the exposed nickel-iron core of an early planet", according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology, which is handling management, navigation, and operations for the mission led by Arizona State University.

The roid will fly by earth at a speed of 40,800 kilometers per hour and in terms of distance, it will be moving about 17 times the distance of the moon from our planet.

Here's the proposed plan: First, NASA will slam its DART spacecraft into the smaller asteroid (Didymoon) before ESA's Hera spacecraft will come in to map the crash's impact crater and determine the asteroid's mass.

Why is NASA paying so much attention to this asteroid, which could measure up to 1,082 feet (330 meters) across?

An asteroid that is almost the size of Paris's Arc de Triomphe has a one-in-7000 chance of hitting Earth.

2008 KV2 is passing with 0.05 astronomical units (AU) of Earth, and due to its big size, it's considered a "potentially hazardous asteroid", states the Center for Near Earth Object Studies at JPL.

However, this space tourist isn't lingering during its travels. On Saturday, June 29, these celestial icons of existential terror and boundless wealth will get their due on International Asteroid Day, held at the Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology. So, this asteroid will be nearly 17 times the distance apart from Earth.
