France set to sizzle again as deadly heatwave continues”

At least one other station cracked the 45 degrees Celsius threshold and according to a tweet from meteorologist Steve Bowen, at least 12 stations rose above the previous record set in 2003 of 44.1 degrees Celsius (111.4 degrees Fahrenheit) on Friday as well.

The fires come as Europe is hit by a major heatwave, with temperatures in some parts of France reaching record highs.

It's not just France that's shattering records: The heat wave extends across Europe. After taking a dip in a swimming pool to cool off, he collapsed with convulsions and was rushed to the hospital in the town of Cordoba where he later died.

Another case was of a 93-year-old man who collapsed and died on the street in the northern city of Valladolid due to the heatstroke. Schools are spraying kids with water and nursing homes are equipping the elderly with hydration sensors as France and other nations battle a record-setting heat wave baking much of Europe. "I want to appeal to the sense of responsibility of citizens - there are avoidable deaths in every heatwave", French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said.

About 4,000 schools closed because they couldn't ensure safe conditions, and local authorities cancelled many end-of-school-year carnivals.

In the northeastern city of Girona, the mercury reached a record high of 43.9 degrees on Friday, the Catalan city's highest-ever temperature on record. France's health minister and British police warned people to swim only in authorized areas.

On Thursday, Buzyn complained that despite a barrage of public health warnings on radio, TV and on public transport, some parents were still leaving their children in hot cars and joggers seen exercising in the midday heat. The heat has already claimed several lives, including a 17-year-old harvest worker in Spain and a 72-year-old homeless man in Italy. A Syrian child was seriously injured north of Paris Thursday after being catapulted into the air by water gushing from an open fire hydrant and then crashing to the ground. The incident occurred in the multi-ethnic Saint-Denis neighbourhood where "uncapping" hydrants has always been used as a way to cool off.

More than 600 firefighters and six water-dropping aircraft were battling the worst fire in two decades in the Catalonia region Friday, as Spain is forecast to endure the peak of its heat wave, with temperatures expected to exceed 40 C (104 F).

A psychologically unstable man was arrested after starting a blaze in one village, but the extreme heat was likely to blame for numerous fires, Lauga said.

The national weather agency has predicted temperatures could rise even more, hitting up to 45C (113F) in southern counties such as Herault, Gard, Vaucluse and Bouches-du-Rhone.

Authorities in the capital maintained a ban on driving older cars to curb heatwave-related pollution.
