Virginia doctor murdered while on vacation with his family in Belize

Virginia doctor murdered while on vacation with his family in Belize”

A Virginia doctor is dead after police say he was murdered on vacation.

Swank was a cardiologist with the Carilion Clinic in Virginia, and he also taught at Virginia Tech's medical school, according to the hospital.

On Monday, the Carilion Clinic where Swank worked tweeted a statement recognizing the slain doctor. Swank was a well-respected and well-loved colleague.

Graniel was later found "in a fetal position behind the steering wheel of the skiff" with four gunshot wounds, while Swank was discovered "floating face down in the lagoon about 30 feet away from the skiff" having also been shot four times. "Swank's family in the coming days".

Belize Police Commissioner Chester Williams told local Channel 5 news that authorities believe Swank's tour guide, Mario Graniel, 53, was the intended target of hit, because he "had a misunderstanding with one of the local notorious gang" members.

"We are heartbroken at his loss. Dr".

Just the day before his death, Graniel was interviewed by police when three shots were fired at the apartment complex where he lived in the Boca del Rio area.

The bodies of both Graniel and Swank were taken to the medical examiner in the region and the investigation is continuing according to Belize City Police. "His absence leaves a void in our team and in our community".

Swank's sudden death stunned co-workers and patients.

Rhonda Saunders, a 10-year patient of Swank's, told CNN affiliate WFXR-TV he made a huge difference in her life.

"He saved my life and everytime I went to his office he was a very knowledgeable, patient and caring person", she said.

The State Department has issued a Level 2 travel advisory for Belize, urging "increased catuion" as "violent crime - such as sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder - are common even during daylight hours and in tourist areas".
