ICC CWC'19: Avishka Fernando can be Sri Lanka's 'spark': Mahela Jayawardene”

She showed a full range of emotions as she took her place in the stands, with expressions ranging from pain and disbelief when a wicket fell, to partisan support when the likes of Nicholas Pooran, who scored his first one-day worldwide century, fuelled belief that the West Indies could win.

Sri Lanka's ICC World Cup 2019 campaign came to a premature end when England defeated India on June 30 at Edgbaston. Rihanna, the singer from the Caribbean, travelled all the way to Durham to cheer the West Indies team although they were out of contention for a semi-final berth.

Former captain Mahela Jayawardene says Avishka Fernando can be the "spark" to reignite Sri Lanka after the 21-year-old hit his maiden one-day global ton against the West Indies.

The pop sensations was reunited with her former teacher Roddy Estwick, who is the current West Indies assistant coach.

"He made a lasting impact on my life and he really offered great advice to me and many others when we were at school at Combermere". 'We have a young team and a young batting line-up. "We give him full confidence to go out there and play the game that he knows he needs to play".

The side's captain Jason Holder praised the musician for taking the time to support the team, who sadly have failed to make it through the group stage of the competition. "It was a pleasant surprise", said Holder. "But I'm sure the boys felt her presence in the stands and she came down to the dressing room as well and met quite a few of the players and that was also refreshing".
