Samsung: You won't be using smartphones in 5 years

Samsung: You won't be using smartphones in 5 years”

During a recent meeting with a few media outlets in Seoul, South Korea, DJ Koh, Samsung's CEO, went into detail about what happened and came clean about where the Galaxy Fold is at this point in time.

"[The] previous 10 years, it was an era of the smartphone", said Koh.

"I pushed it through before it was ready...."

Mr Koh admitted that the pressure they felt from the Huawei Mate X and it's readiness caused them to push out the Galaxy Fold earlier than they should have without enough testing.

Samsung sent out invites to its next Galaxy Unpacked event, which kicks off at 4 p.m. ET on August 7 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. For now, the company is "in the process of recovery" and doing lots of testing.

Samsung's foldable phone was originally slated for an April launch, but the company postponed it after several reviewers reported serious issues with their Fold units. That said, the hope is not all gone as we might see a drop in the price of components and more and more companies move towards foldable phones.

Now, with this news from Koh, we know that during the past couple of weeks, they believe they "defined all of the issues and all of the problems [they] couldn't find" before sending to reviewers. Now if the upcoming Note 10 indeed comes with four lenses at the rear, it's going to be a first for any flagship phone from Samsung so far. "Our brand philosophy is "do what you can't", We make what can't be made, and do what can't be done. Give us a bit more time". In the meantime, Samsung has been granted a patent for a wild new folding smartphone.

One of the spillover effects from the strength of the S10 series' sales for the quarter is that it's also given Samsung a bigger chunk of the worldwide premium smartphone market.

Koh added that though foldable smartphones are the future, smart devices with varied form factors may eventually surpass smartphones in popularity.
