Spotify Ending Beta Program For Independent Artists Uploading Music

Spotify Ending Beta Program For Independent Artists Uploading Music”

The function to upload music directly to Spotify was initially only available to American musicians, but should have become more widely available later.

"SoundCloud is committed to giving creators of all levels the tools to share their work instantly, monetise directly and distribute to all the major streaming platforms like Spotify, Amazon, Apple and more to reach as many fans as possible". These distribution companies provide artists with access to the streaming service and take care of licensing, distribution and royalties, things Spotify may have found too complex to handle on its own.

The feature is rolling out in beta by "invitation to a few hundred US-based independent artists, but we're excited to bring upload to even more artists, labels, and teams in the future". The service was exclusively offered through Spotify For Artists.

However, after less than a year Spotify has made a decision to shut down the beta upload tool. With it being selectively released over the coming months.

The beta provided Spotify with information on how to better suit the needs of independent artists such as growing stronger relations with distribution partners and focusing on "developing tools" such as Spotify for Artists and playlist submission tools.

No reason or explanation has been given for the closure of Spotify's beta program.

Spotify's blog explained: "The insights and feedback we received from artists in the beta led us to believe the most impactful way we can improve the experience of delivering music to Spotify for as many artists and labels as possible is to lean into the great work our distribution partners are already doing to serve the artist community". For example, CD Baby charges $9.95 per single and $49 per album, while DistroKid charges $19.99 to upload unlimited albums and songs for a year.
