Elon Musk: Tesla Will ‘Most Likely’ Bring Self-Driving Chip Upgrade”

Tesla will likely start installing the chip it created to one day make its cars autonomous on vehicles that don't already have it near the end of this year, CEO Elon Musk said on Sunday. That's about half-a-million cars.

Elon has been touting the new chip at Tesla's Autonomy Investor Day earlier this year, a 260 square millimeter powerhouse with 6 billion transistors that should offer 21 times the performance compared to the Nvidia chips it's set to replace. The company is now planning on offering the new hardware retrofit to owners of HW2-spec Teslas for no additional cost, provided the owners have already ponied up the dough for Full Self-Driving functionality.

The new, Full Self-Driving (FSD) computer is also fitted with two such chips for redundancy, as are all the other critical features such as power delivery. Tesla announced the new chip costs 20 percent less than its previous "HW2+" Nvidia, even though is way more powerful.

The software for full self driving is not yet available, despite the name of the Tesla FSD option pack.

Tesla shipment estimates by MIT researcher Lex Fridman suggest Tesla has delivered over 500,000 HW2 vehicles, and Musk reckons it can ship about 500,000 more with FSD already built-in. Autopilot is ADAS that provides a mix of adaptive cruise management and lane steering and is now a standard function on new cars.

Musk yesterday confirmed the likely price increase when asked on Twitter if consumers have limited time left to buy a Tesla auto before prices "go up severalfold to balance supply and demand" once the company solves full self-driving. In spite of the criticism however, the option soon returned in February.
