Recovered GoPro video shows final moments of Himalayas climbers

What were the last few moments of the eight mountaineers who went missing while trekking to Nanda Devi East peak in Uttarakhand's Pithoragarh district like? The shocking video shows the eight climbers roped together just seconds before an avalanche kills them.

"ITBP search team of mountaineers found the memory video device at 19K ft [5800 metres] while they were searching the area where bodies were spotted". The deceased were originally part of a 12-person expedition but four Britons managed to escape before the suspected avalanche hit.

The group was led by experienced British mountain guide, Martin Moran, who had led several prior expeditions in the Himalayas.

The footage was found on a camera buried in snow near the recovered bodies.

The video was found by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), during an extremely hard mission to recover the bodies of the eight mountaineers.

"Suddenly, we noticed a loud noise", he said. "The video went blank and stopped", police spokesman Vivek Kumar Pandey told AFP.

"They were crossing a very unsafe ridge". He adds the group may have caused the snow ledge to give way, "triggering an avalanche".

'It was mesmerising for us to see the footage, ' said A.P.S. Nambadia, the border police inspector general who planned the operation to retrieve the bodies.

"It will help us to analyse what went wrong with their mission".

Australian Ruth McCance was among the eight climbers missing in India's Himalayas.

The group was attempting to climb India's second-highest peak Nanda Devi when contact was lost on 26 May. Expert climbers dispatched by ITBP eventually brought the bodies down on foot, "with respect and dignity".

Nambadia said the exhausted rescue team nearly cracked emotionally when they found the climbers' belongings such as a toy penguin.

"They were emotionally charged when they found the baby (toy) penguin". The ITBP team recovered camera, mobile, mountaineering equipment and other items from the disaster site.
