Amazon Plans Nationwide Broadband For Home & Mobile

Amazon Plans Nationwide Broadband For Home & Mobile”

Nonetheless, the FCC documenting demonstrates that it has been pondering this plan for a while.

In April, Bloomberg reported upon Amazon's idea to offer "fixed broadband communications services to rural and hard-to-reach area", to the millions who lack basic internet coverage.

It's safe to say Amazon likes to set its goals high, so high in fact it has just reached out to the FCC about launching over 3,000 broadband satellites that would cover all of the United States, and nearly the rest of the populated world. The plan was dubbed Project Kuiper and Kuiper Systems, a wholly-owned Amazon subsidiary, has been set up to implement it.

Amazon wants the regulatory body to grant permission for the online retailer and cloud service giant to "launch and operate a non-geostationary satellite orbit system using Ka-band frequencies".

Low earth orbit classification covers satellites which orbit at altitudes from 112 to 1,200 miles and they need to be powered to stay aloft.

Amazon is getting closer toward its goal of providing global broadband internet from space through its Project Kuiper initiative. SpaceX has already launched its first batch of satellites in low Earth orbit for its Starlink broadband constellation.

On Tuesday, FCC Chairman Ajit Pai addressed the private sector push for small satellites and his enthusiasm for it. The filing reiterated Amazon's plans to associate "tens of millions" of individuals around the globe, in spite of the fact that the company cautioned that it couldn't cover everything - it requested a waiver on a prerequisite to serve the entire USA as its satellites wouldn't cover parts of Alaska. "That's why the FCC under my leadership has moved quickly to give a green light to satellite entrepreneurs like OneWeb, SpaceX, and O3b and is considering other applications from entrants like Amazon and Boeing".

Pai also noted that on Tuesday he presented his FCC colleagues a draft order to make it easier and cheaper to license small satellites.
