European Union calls on Iran to uphold nuclear deal, reverse uranium enrichment breach

European Union calls on Iran to uphold nuclear deal, reverse uranium enrichment breach”

President Donald Trump accused Iran on Wednesday of secretly enriching uranium for a long time and said United States sanctions would be increased "substantially" soon, as the UN nuclear watchdog held an emergency meeting on Tehran's breach of a nuclear deal.

The US ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency said there was no credible reason for Iran to breach two key commitments on uranium enrichment. The other parties in the deal - Russia, China, Germany, France, Britain and the European Union - have called for Iran to stick to its commitments.

The tanker's detention comes at a particularly sensitive time as tensions between the US and Iran grow over the unraveling of a 2015 nuclear deal, which President Donald Trump withdrew from previous year.

Iran's representative to worldwide organisations in Vienna, Kazem Gharib Abadi, said at the meeting that USA actions were "neither legitimate nor legal" and should not be accepted by the global community.

A meeting with Rear-Admiral Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, is planned for Wednesday morning.

The 2015 deal had been described as a triumph of diplomacy against unilateralism and a major step to counter proliferation.

Iran has yet to withdraw fully from the agreement but has recently announced cuts to its commitments in response to new rafts of U.S. sanctions imposed following the USA withdrawal in 2018.

Meanwhile, the U.N.'s watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) verified on Monday that Iran had indeed enriched uranium beyond the limit allowed in the JCPOA. Iran's oil exports are now below 500,000 bpd.

The Board of Governors of the IAEA is scheduled to meet Wednesday to discuss the current status of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) at the request of the USA, which famously withdrew from the so-called "Iran Deal" before introducing a raft of new sanctions against the Middle Eastern nation in 2018.

Such threats put new pressure on European countries, which insist Iran must continue to comply with the agreement even though the United States is no longer doing so.

Abadi said in a German newspaper interview published earlier in the day that Tehran meant to preserve the nuclear deal if all other signatories honored their commitments under it.

"We have nothing to hide", he said after the IAEA meeting ended without any action taken against Iran.

France sent one of its top diplomatic advisers to visit Tehran on Tuesday in an effort to boost support for saving the JCPOA.

"We are obviously exploring. various avenues for additional sanctions on Tehran".

Trump had issued similar warnings in recent days after Tehran declared that it was enriching uranium up to 4.5%., breaching the 2015 nuclear accord.

In the past two weeks Iran has breached two limits central to the 2015 nuclear deal, which aimed to extended the time Iran would need to obtain enough fissile material for a nuclear weapon. It has offered to return to the agreement, but Trump has long rejected the deal, saying it was too generous to Tehran and did not address its involvement in regional conflicts.

The US and the European countries are deceiving us.
