Manchin introduces bill pressuring US Soccer to increase women's pay

Manchin introduces bill pressuring US Soccer to increase women's pay”

After the US women's soccer team has won its 4th World Cup Championship, time is way overdue to kick away its grossly unequal pay with the underperforming USA men's soccer team.

The victory is the USA women's national team's fourth Women's World Cup title and second in a row. A lawsuit was filed by five players in 2016, with another filed by all 28 members of the team in the months leading up to the 2019 World Cup.

Manchin, a West Virginia Democrat, was inspired to sponsor the legislation after receiving a letter from West Virginia University's women's soccer coach Nikki Izzo-Brown, asking for his support for the US Women's National Team's pursuit of equal pay, he said in a statement.

In addition to bringing in more World titles than the men, for the past three years, the US women's soccer team has brought in more revenue at $50.8 million compared to $49.9 million.

For Rapinoe and other veterans of the USA women's team, New York's Canyon of Heroes is familiar ground: They were treated to a parade there in 2015, after their last World Cup win. Joe Manchin introduced a bill Tuesday that would withhold federal funding from the 2026 men's World Cup, which will be hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico, until the US Soccer Federation agrees to equal pay for both teams, BuzzFeed reports.

But whether federal funding will play a key role in the upcoming games is unclear.

"There is no rationale that the women should not get paid what the men get paid", Cuomo said, per assembled media.

"The inequality of pay is unjust and this wage gap with the USA men's national team has to stop".

"The level of interest and excitement is much higher from four years ago", said Jessica Lappin, president of the parade's organizers, Alliance of Downtown New York, referring to the 2015 parade for the team after its last World Cup victory.

Rapinoe became one of the tournament's most outspoken stars, as the U.S.co-captain scored the first goal in the final from the penalty spot against the Dutch.

"It's gonna be liiiit", Rapinoe said, drawing out the word as she climbed aboard a float shortly before 9 a.m., with a Champagne flute in her hand.

Arguably the most powerful moment in Sunday's 2-0 final victory over the Netherlands came after the final whistle when a chant of "equal pay" could be heard ringing around the State de Lyon.
