NBA Coaches Will Be Able to Challenge Plays During Games Next Season”

I think they're put in hard situations because when they're sitting across from a player and whether it's conversations that are happening earlier than they should or frankly things are being discussed that don't fall squarely within the collective bargaining agreement, it puts teams in a very hard position because they are reading or hearing that other teams are doing other things to compete, and at the end of the day, that's what this league is about: competing for championships.

So expect changes on that front for 2020.

The NFL has a red flag to announce a request for a replay review, and now the National Basketball Association will have a twirling index finger for the 2019-20 season.

Per Ben Golliver, Silver said that the consensus around the league is that the rules regarding "leakage" and "slippage" during free agency must be revisited. "And whether that's by virtue of practice, whether it's because just the world around us has changed, whether it's because players have power that they didn't use to have. let's step back, let's reset, let's talk to our players' association about what system makes sense going forward".

Silver's comments came after a free-agency period in which several star players changed teams through deals that were apparently agreed upon before the official start of free agency at 6 p.m. ET on June 30. Although stopping this so the rules are followed sounds great, it seems implausible at this point. It's pointless to have rules that we can't enforce.

Kevin Durant's decision to join the Brooklyn Nets was one of the major pieces of free-agent news this summer.

The Davis and George situations represented a potentially ominous precedent, because both players are elite talents who successfully forced their way from small-market teams to Los Angeles despite being nowhere near the end of their contracts. Some deals that are known to be happening still aren't completed, meaning teams still have not had the chance to celebrate certain signings or acquisitions.

"We have work to do", Silver said.

"First of all, you know, of course that's nothing new in the league in terms of trade demands.

Players have leverage. They have economic power of their own", Silver said.

"The sense in the room was we should revisit those rules, think about what does make sense for our teams so that ultimately we can create a level playing field". "I think it hurts the perception of integrity around the league if people say, 'You have that rule and the teams aren't totally complying, then why do you have it?' There certainly was a sense that we could do a better job".

"There's always been sort of stuff around the edges that's gone on", Silver said.

A coach's challenge has been used in the G-League the past two seasons and now is being used in the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Each team is allowed one challenge a game, successful or not, on a personal foul charged to a player on that team, an out of bounds call or whistles for goaltending or basket interference. Though no one was caught tampering, the news of his trade request dominated the airwaves for quite some time, causing teams to strategize on how to land the star. No calls will be allowed to be reviewed in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime The crew chief in the game will determine the final outcome of the challenges involving fouls while the NBA Replay Center in Secaucus, New Jersey will decide the other reviewable calls. The replay center will have the authority to review whether a shot was a 2-pointer or 3-pointer whether or not refs in an arena ask for such a shot to be checked, plus potential shot-clock violations.
