Ross Perot, billionaire tycoon and two-time USA presidential candidate, dies at 89”

Ross Perot, a self-made billionaire, patriot, and philanthropist, has died at the age of 89 after a long battle with leukemia.

"RIP to Ross Perot, who 27 years ago proved once and for all that being good at making money does not necessarily mean you're good at anything else, and we never made that mistake again", NPR's Peter Segal tweeted. Some Republicans blamed him for Bush's lost to Clinton as Perot garnered the largest percentage of votes for a third-party candidate since former President Theodore Roosevelt's 1912 bid.

Perot leaped into the 1992 presidential race as an independent and quickly found a lode of Americans turned off by the Republican and Democratic parties. Four years later, running under the Reform Party ticket, his impact was considerably less significant. In 1984, he sold EDS to General Motors for an impression $2.5 billion, according to Celebrity Net Worth. He later founded and served as the chief executive officer of Perot Systems.

Pros laughed at his use of charts and talk of NAFTA's "giant sucking sound" taking jobs to Mexico, but he won the very voters who'd later be the core Trump constituency. In 1968, Perot took EDS public and became a millionaire.

Aside from his endorsements of Bush and Romney, Perot has mostly remained quiet on topics of politics over the last few decades.

Forbes reports that Perot was also an investor in Steve Jobs' NEXT computer company, which Jobs founded after leaving Apple in 1985.

He championed patriotic causes, and in the late 1970s and 1980s claimed that hundreds of missing USA soldiers had been left behind and imprisoned after the Vietnam War. "Laura and I send our heartfelt condolences to the entire Perot family as they celebrate a full life", the former president said (via ABC News). Thousands of criminals and political prisoners, as well as two of Perot's employees, were freed after that raid. Characterizing himself as an antidote to hyper-partisanship, Perot walked the line on social issues; he refused to support overturning the gay service ban in the military or consider appointing a member of the LGBTQ community to his Cabinet.

He is survived by his wife, Margot; his sister, Bette Perot; son Ross Jr.; daughter Nancy; daughter Suzanne; daughter Carolyn; daughter Katherine; their spouses, grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

He would eventually be honored for this activism, receiving an award from then-Secretary of Veteran Affairs James Peake in 2009.
