Sir Kim Darroch resigns as United Kingdom ambassador to US”

Memos from Kim Darroch in which he described the Trump administration as inept were leaked to a British Sunday newspaper, infuriating the USA president, who launched a Twitter attack on both the envoy and outgoing British Prime Minister Theresa May, who had given Darroch her full support.

British Ambassador Kim Darroch said the leak made it impossible for him to continue serving in his capacity.

"The current situation is making it impossible for me to carry out my role as I would like", Darroch reportedly wrote to the UK Foreign Office.

Darroch had been set to retire at the end of the year.

It's unclear whether May will have time to name a replacement before she leaves office later this month.

The professionalism and integrity of the British civil service is the envy of the world.

"There is a large embassy to run and he is getting on with business", the source said.

May herself is due to step down as prime minister by the end of July and while one of the two contenders to replace her, foreign minister Jeremy Hunt, had said Darroch should keep his job, the other, frontrunner Boris Johnson, had pointedly declined to do so.

"I think it's very important we should have a close partnership, a close friendship with the United States", said Johnson, whom Trump has praised in the past.

In the memos published over the weekend by the Mail, a British tabloid, Darroch described the Trump White House as "inept", "dysfunctional" and "unpredictable".

Trump predictably responded with fury to Darroch's private assessment of his White House, which he portrayed as "uniquely dysfunctional". "He got a raw deal from the press", Graham tweeted Wednesday.

In response to Darroch's resignation Wednesday, Guardian columnist Owen Jones tweeted: "We're on course to become the 51st state of Donald Trump's U.S., with Boris Johnson as his consul". On his state visit to the United Kingdom in June, Trump confirmed he told May how to leave the European Union, but admitted he did not know if the strategy would have worked.

McDonald said it was too soon to say what the fallout would be from the leak. There must be consequences.

Former ambassador to France Lord Ricketts echoed that view and added "I wish Boris Johnson could have brought himself to say the same".

But he said the trans-Atlantic relationship was "so deep and so wide that it will withstand any individual squall".

Darroch, a career diplomat who previously served as Britain's envoy to the European Union, had been accused by some Brexit supporters of being biased towards the bloc.

The difficulties facing Sir Kim following Mr Trump's outburst became apparent when he was "uninvited" to a White House dinner in honour of the Emir of Qatar.

"I don't know the Ambassador but have been told he is a pompous fool", Trump wrote in a series of early morning tweets doubling down on British envoy Kim Darroch.

And while Boris Johnson's hesitation in backing him was a factor in Darroch's resignation, it was not the main reason.
