His mother, Vaughn Small, confirmed to Netwerk24 that one of the heroes of the 1995 Rugby World Cup victory died on Wednesday around noon.

Small played provincial rugby for Transvaal (now the Golden Lions), Natal (now the Sharks) and Western Province, appearing in Currie Cup finals for all three sides and winning the trophy with Natal and WP.

Small made his debut against the All Blacks in 1992 and in his final Test in 1997, he scored his 20th try to break Dane Gerber's record.

Ruben Kruger died of brain cancer in 2010, while Joost van Der Westhuizen died of motor neuron disease in 2017.

He also became the first Springbok to ever be sent off, as a result of dissent towards referee Ed Morison. In his 2002 autobiography, Chester, Williams claims Small once yelled at him in a match, "You fucking kaffir, why do you want to play our game?" Most recently he'd been assistant coach at the Pirates in Johannesburg.
