Trump administration Expects China to Buy US Farm Goods”

U.S. officials held a phone call on Tuesday with their Chinese counterparts to discuss the ongoing trade conflict between the countries, United States officials said.

But sources familiar with the talks and China trade watchers in Washington say the summit did little to clear the path for top negotiators to resolve an impasse that caused trade deal talks to break down in early May.

Nonetheless, after the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping over the latest G20 summit in the Japanese City of Osaka, Trump had agreed to cancel a tariff hike on all Chinese imports, untouched by trade spat so far, worth of $300 billion, meanwhile, Chinese President had also agreed to purchase some U.S. agricultural goods.

A US official said last week that the discussions were expected to resume with a phone call between US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Chinese Vice-Premier Liu He. He said a face-to-face dialogue between both sides' negotiating team would be beneficial and could also occur in the Chinese capital Beijing, but offered no further details.

"Having said that, we have a very strong - I want to underscore this - a very strong expectation that China will really shortly, maybe immediately, begin to purchase United States agricultural products", he told the U.S. broadcaster.

Trump said then that China would restart large purchases of U.S. agricultural commodities, and the USA would ease some export restrictions on Chinese telecom equipment giant Huawei Technologies.

The same official indicated that talks would continue "as appropriate".

After talks almost collapsed in May, Mr Trump and Mr Xi met on June 29 on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Japan and agreed to resume negotiations toward ending their year-long trade war and to refrain from imposing any new tariffs.

It doesn't believe those devices pose a national security threat.

However, Kudlow emphasized that the USA government will not buy Huawei parts, components or systems. U.S. officials say they will maintain some of the additional tariffs they are charging on Chinese imports.

"I think that kind of thinking would probably do great damage to these trade talks", he said.

Kudlow's comments suggested it was still unclear whether the two sides would resume work from the draft text agreed before that pull-back, as US officials want, or whether they will use a different starting point.

One way for China to avoid the appearance of giving in to U.S. demands is to take some legal steps on key issues before the deal is agreed.
