Trump Speech on Environment Doesn't Pass Smell Test with Activists

Trump Speech on Environment Doesn't Pass Smell Test with Activists”

Trump has said that under his administration, the United States is a global leader in protecting the environment, though in June 2017, he announced plans to withdraw the country from the Paris Agreement on climate change. He is widely seen as vulnerable on that issue ahead of next year's presidential elections.

Trump did claim some environmental progress for his administration, predicting carbon emissions in the United States would drop this year and in 2020 and stating the government is now strengthening standards of lead and copper in drinking water for the first time in almost 30 years.

In a frequently political speech, Trump said Democrats want to improve the environment by reducing energy production in ways that would cut American jobs. "We have rejected this failed approach and we are seeing great results".

Energy Secretary Rick Perry, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Interior Secretary David Bernhardt were among the Cabinet members in attendance.

Wheeler told press during a phone call previewing the speech on Monday that he planned to discuss that "air pollution has continued to decline under President Trump's leadership".

But they also show some increases since Trump took office, in fine particulate matter emissions like soot and smoke from the combustion of coal and oil.

Wheeler, during the event, spoke about the administration's improvements in environmental monitors like air pollutants, as well as touting the administration's efforts on water infrastructure and environmental provisions for marine litter in the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Mr Ken Cook, a spokesman for the Environmental Working Group, called Mr Trump's speech "utter fantasy".

"[Trump] is the worst president in history for the environment", Brune said.

Jill Tauber, vice president of litigation, climate and energy at Earthjustice, which has filed 120 lawsuits against the administration, ridiculed Trump for claiming that his agenda protected the environment. Trump did note that since he took office the USA has become the world's leading producer of oil and gas.

More recently, a growing number of cities, states, businesses and even some utilities have pledged to try to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions - a trend in direct conflict with the Trump administration's support of fossil fuels. The US president, who has called climate change a Chinese hoax, dismissed a report past year by his own government warning of massive economic losses should carbon emissions continue to feed climate change unchecked. He's claimed windmills cause cancer and repeatedly said the USA has the cleanest water and air.
