Trump tweets likely end UK ambassador’s job

Trump tweets likely end UK ambassador’s job”

"I was a good friend to two presidents, George Bush and Bill Clinton, but I had to be able to report honestly to Number 10 what they were likely to do next, any big differences we might have, and if ambassadors can no longer do that then we're in a very different world", said Robin Renwick, who served in the 1990s as the British envoy in Washington.

Trump had lit into the British government after the publication of secret dispatches from Ambassador Sir Kim Darroch, who called the United States president, "incompetent, " "inept", and "clumsy, " among other things.

May has given her full support to Washington envoy Kim Darroch after he described Trump's administration as "dysfunctional" and "diplomatically clumsy and inept" in memos that were leaked to a British newspaper on Sunday.

The Cabinet Office has launched a formal investigation to find out who is responsible and all eyes are now on whether somebody is caught amid calls for a criminal inquiry.

Trump fired back at the "wacky ambassador" on Tuesday, calling him a "very stupid guy" and a "pompous fool". In the same tweets, Trump also mocked May and the "failed Brexit negotiation". "Tell him the us now has the best Economy & Military anywhere in the World, by far and they are both only getting bigger, better and stronger.Thank you, Mr. President".

May's spokesman James Slack, for his part, vowed that "strong" UK-US ties will continue despite the leak.

The former London Mayor is a friend of Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and has been praised by the U.S. President, who has said that he thinks Johnson would make "a terrific prime minister".

Trump, in turn, promised on his Twitter page that Washington "will no longer deal with" Darroch over his unfriendly remarks.

"I told her how to do that deal, but she went her own foolish way - was unable to get it done".

In an extraordinary onslaught against an ally, Mr Trump also used a Twitter post to attack Theresa May over Brexit, accusing her of ignoring his advice and "going her own foolish way". With a vengeance. and not only at ambassador Darroch but also at British Prime Minister Theresa May.

There are four main theories in Whitehall about where the leak could have come from: A hostile state actor, a USA spy source, a pro-Trump government minister or a disgruntled civil servant. "What a mess she and her representatives have created", he said.

He said: "I have got a good relationship with the White House and I have no embarrassment in saying that".

"The leak is absolutely unacceptable and, as you would expect, contact has been made with the Trump administration setting out our view that we believe that it is unacceptable", he said.

The White House cancelled trade talks between Wilbur Ross, the United States commerce secretary, and his counterpart Liam Fox on Tuesday because Sir Kim had been due to attend.

The Foreign Affairs Committee, which will hear from senior Foreign Office mandarin Sir Simon McDonald on Wednesday, has written to the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick about the leak. "While I thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent state visit last month, it was the Queen who I was most impressed with!"

Former Foreign Secretary William Hague told the BBC the government was right to back Sir Kim.

He said the next prime minister: "Will need to explain that you can't change an ambassador at the demand of a host country", adding that: "it is their job to give an honest assessment of what's happening in that country".
