Amal Clooney Takes Aim at Trump for

Hunt, who is battling Boris Johnson to become Britain's next leader, raised the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the jailing of activists in China and Vietnam and the murder of reporters in Mexico.

The UK will provide 3 million pounds and Canada, the co-hosts of the Global Conference for Media Freedom, will make an additional Canadian Dollar 1 million contribution to help kick-start the new fund.

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, the British government's special envoy on media freedom, is attending and plans to set up a panel of experts to advise governments on strengthening legal protection for journalists.

On Friday, the UK Foreign Office announced that it had denied Russian media outlets accreditation to the global conference.

"Australia also raises media freedom issues bilaterally - as Amal Clooney knows, as we did in the case of the Reuters journalists in Myanmar a year ago, including during my visit last December", Ms Payne said at the conference. According to the United Nations cultural body Unesco 99 media workers were killed past year.

"World leaders responded with little more than a collective shrug", she said.

The gathering announced the founding of a global fund to provide training, legal support and other resources for journalists in danger zones, administered by the United Nations cultural body.

Ms Clooney, in a speech to the conference, also said media freedom was declining in a worrying trend.

In his letter to the British secretary of state for foreign and Commonwealth affairs, Simon said by denying RT and Sputnik accreditation based on a determination that these outlets are a form of propaganda, "your government risks undermining the very principles of free expression that the conference was meant to promote".

Russian state-owned RT was censured a year ago by Britain's broadcast regulator for breaking United Kingdom impartiality rules in its coverage of the poisoning of a Russian ex-spy in England.

The two countries are hosting an worldwide conference on media freedom in London.

The United Nations human rights expert who conducted an independent probe into the murder of dissident Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi on Tuesday urged the USA to act on her damning findings.

"I wouldn't use the language President Trump used, and I wouldn't agree with it", he said.

"The strongest safe guard against the dark side of power is accountability and scrutiny", Hunt said.

Hunt argued the diplomat should have been defended for "just doing what he should have been doing".

Clooney also took aim at Trump, saying "the country of James Madison" - one of America's founding fathers and a champion of a free press - "has a leader today who vilifies the media".

The UK and Canada will use the Global Conference for Media Freedom to lobby countries to contribute to the fund, and sign a pledge committing them to leverage diplomatic networks and take action together on abuses against the media.
