Apple disables Walkie-Talkie app due to snooping vulnerability

Apple disables Walkie-Talkie app due to snooping vulnerability”

Apple released a fix for the bug a little more than a week after that.

Apple has temporarily shut down the Walkie Talkie app on Apple Watches after finding a bug which would allow someone to eavesdrop on another person via their iPhone.

The bug was reported to Apple through its security portal, TechCrunch noted, but there's apparently no evidence that it was exploited before the company was alerted.

The Apple Watch Walkie-Talkie app has been disabled by its parent company, Apple itself. We apologize again for this issue and the inconvenience.

Earlier this year, a flaw in Apple's FaceTime video chat app was found, which would allow people to listen in on people before picking up a call.

"Although we are not aware of any use of the vulnerability against a customer and specific conditions and sequences of events are required to exploit it, we take the security and privacy of our customers extremely seriously", explained.

Walkie Talkie allows two users, each with an Apple Watch and who have accepted an invitation to chat from one another, to send audio clips back and forth using a "push to talk" button on the Watch screen - similar to a traditional walkie talkie.

The market-leading Apple Watch lineup owes its enormous popularity to not only a groundbreaking slew of life-saving technologies, but also a very convenient batch of smooth wrist communication features.

At the end of the day, although iPhone and Apple Watch users have every reason to be annoyed by these discoveries and the temporary deactivation of the Walkie-Talkie app, the important thing to remember is this particular vulnerability was never exploited (at least to Apple's current knowledge) and the functionality will be restored "as soon as possible".

Apple was criticized at the time for being too slow to respond to the bug. The bug affected the iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
