Bruins, Danton Heinen set August 3 arbitration date for new deal

Bruins, Danton Heinen set August 3 arbitration date for new deal”

Heinen, 24, was a fourth-round pick by the Bruins in 2014.

Boston on Tuesday signed restricted free-agent center Danton Heinen to a two-year contract with an average annual value (AAV) of $2.8 million.

Playing mostly third-line minutes on a deep team that went to the Stanley Cup Final, Heinen put up 11 goals and 34 points in 77 games. The announcement came hours after an August 3 arbitration deadline was set. The 6-foot-1, 188-pound forward also chipped in two goals and six assists in 24 postseason games.

The Canadian winger has 81 points in 162 National Hockey League games.

He enjoyed his best offensive season as a rookie in 2017-18, totaling 16 goals and 31 assists for 47 points in 77 games and adding one goal in nine playoff games. Sticking with Toronto, Andreas Johnsson signed a four-year extension that carries a $3.4 million cap hit, while Kasperi Kapanen signed a three-year deal with a $3.2 million cap hit. If Heinen is awarded a two-year deal in excess of $3.5 million, the Bruins could instead opt for a one-year deal at that given salary. That should be more than enough to bring back defensemen Brandon Carlo and Charlie McAvoy, who are both restricted free agents.
