Bulk Pig Ears For Animals Might Contain Salmonella

Bulk Pig Ears For Animals Might Contain Salmonella”

Of the 71 total people, 27 ill people were reported in NY.

The epidemiological and traceback information collected thus far in the investigation indicates that Agroson's LLC of Bronx, New York, is the exclusive distributor of the imported papayas that likely made consumers from this outbreak sick. The CDC considers this to be a rather grim number, and it notes that the typical hospitalization rate for Salmonella is around 20 percent, suggesting that this is a particularly serious situation.

Onset of illness dates range from November 18, 2018, to June 13, 2019. Separately, 17 people of 24 interviewed reported contact with pig ear dog treats or dogs fed those treats.

Officials are also urging people not to eat fruit salads or other mixes that include papayas from Mexico, and are encouraging consumers to wash and sanitize places where papayas were stored like countertops and refrigerator drawers. These records showed that Cavi brand papayas were sold at multiple grocery stores where ill people bought papayas.

Importers, suppliers, and distributors should not sell Cavi brand papayas, which are distributed by Agroson's LLC.

As for what the CDC recommends going forward, it goes without saying that you should avoid Cavi brand papayas at all cost, even if some of them have been eaten without issue.

Report your illness to the health department.

Most people infected with salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food. The illness usually lasts four days to one week. The infection may spread from the intestines to the bloodstream and then to other places in the body. Children younger than 5 years old, pregnant women, adults 65 and older and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
