Rafael Benitez takes swipe at Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley

Newcastle continue to search for a new manager ahead of the 2019/20 season and reports claim the club are set to make a formal offer for Sheffield Wednesday manager Steve Bruce.

Allardyce was in charge of the Magpies from 2007 to 2008 and was considered as a replacement for Rafael Benitez, who left the club at the end of June.

Sam Allardyce has revealed he was surprised Newcastle United approached him for their vacant managerial job.

Perhaps it's simply the prospect of having a manager who may have thought his top flight days were over and supported the club as a boy - and therefore won't push back as much as Benitez did - that appeals.

"It never really got to the sort of talks people are suggesting".

"The fans are a bit more tolerant now". I politely said no and moved on.

"It's that thing [in your mind]. don't go back".

More news: Allardyce reveals he turned down Newcastle job offer

"Maybe if it was the first time around I'd have jumped at it, but not now".

"I never got to talk to Mike (Ashley, owner of the club)".

It is reported in The Star that the Newcastle born manager (58), will be offered a Premier League salary along with a £60m war-chest in order to try and build a squad capable of being competitive in The Premier League next season. It was better that I made a quick decision for everybody because they're in pre-season now.

Allardyce, 64, has not held a full-time coaching role since leaving Everton in May 2018.

And the former defender was unhappy with the amount of time he was given at Goodison Park.

"As we all know from experience, in football, just as in everyday life, when people show you respect and affection and do everything they can to make things easier for you, life is much happier, even when you face hard moments".
