SpaceX bags contract to launch IXPE for astrophysics mission”

Astronomers are expecting a lot from the IXPE mission as they are hoping that it will help them in revealing the spin of black holes and help them in the new discoveries about the extreme magnetic fields around a special type of neutron star called magnetars. The launch will cost around $50.3 million taking place on April 2021.

CAPE CANAVERAL-NASA has awarded SpaceX a $50 million contract to launch an X-ray observatory created to measure polarized light from black holes, neutron stars and other high-energy astrophysical objects. Company spokesperson Tracy Young stated July eight that the Falcon 9 launching IXPE would have a reused first stage. It has a planned mission life of two years.

"IXPE is an excellent example of an integrated team comprising government, industry and academia focused on a common goal to deliver exciting and important science - the kind of work Ball loves to do", said Dr. Makenzie Lystrup, vice president and general manager, Civil Space, Ball Aerospace.

"SpaceX is honored that NASA continues to place its trust in our proven launch vehicles to deliver important science payloads to orbit".

SpaceX's President and Chief Operating Officer, Gwynne Shotwell, made the following statement after the announcement of the contract award.

SpaceX has received a contract to help NASA launch an observatory created to help scientists discover astronomical details in space.

As per sources, this is just one of the upcoming launches that have been contracted with SpaceX by NASA. Two missions, Jason-3 and TESS have already taken to the skies atop one of SpaceX's offerings under the agency's Launch Services Program (LSP). The company has also been awarded the contracts for the SWOT, Sentinel-6A, and DART missions. Atwell has had a passion for all things pertaining to aerospace, rocketry, and aviation. The only mission which comes in the name of Northrop Grumman's Pegasus is the launch of NASA's Ionospheric Connection Explorer, or ICON, spacecraft.

Now, NASA and the leading commercial space company have shaken hands on another deal.
