Former Red Wings center Greg Johnson dies at 48”

"Former National Hockey League player and Thunder Bay native Greg Johnson, 48, passed away on Monday in Detroit, according to friends close to the family", reads a statement from the Chronicle Journal.

The career leading scorer for the University of North Dakota hockey program who went on to a long NHL career has died at age 48.

"During his time in Nashville, he was a consummate professional and terrific teammate who was an integral part of our community and in developing the Predators culture that we experience today", the team said in the release. "Our heartfelt sympathies and thoughts are with Greg's family and loved ones at this hard time".

In 2010, he was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame. "He will be greatly missed". No cause of death was given, but the team called his passing "sudden".

Selected by the Flyers with the 33rd pick in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, the center toiled in the minors for several years before making his NHL debut with the Red Wings during the 1993-94 campaign. His 198 assists also rank first all-time at UND. He was the school's male athlete of the year in 1993. He also represented Canada at the 1994 Winter Olympics.

Johnson played an important depth role on those Red Wings teams until he was traded in 1997, right before the Wings won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 42 years.

Johnson played in a total of 785 regular season games and posted 145 goals and 369 points.
