Security breach: FAAN suspends aviation security unit heads in Lagos”

Reports indicate that he was spotted by the pilot who slowed down and turned off the engine as the man sought a way to get into the plane.

According to a viral video shot by one of the passengers in Lagos, the man illegally gained access to the airside with a piece of hand luggage.

A man who climbed onto the wing of a plane as it prepared for takeoff at the airport in Nigeria's Lagos city has been arrested, authorities said.

Details of the identity of the man, his mission and most especially the state of his mental health were yet to be disclosed. The aircraft eventually departed for Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Though he has not yet been publicly identified, he now remains in custody while authorities continue to investigate the unusual incident.

Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has since suspended indefinitely the aviation security unit heads who were on duty when the incident occurred.

Four officers in all were affected: the airport chief security, worldwide terminal security chief and heads of two domestic terminals.

According to FAAN, "The affected officers are the Airport Chief of Security, Mamman Mohammed Sadiku and International Terminal Security Officer, Oni Abiodun".

Henrietta Yakubu, FAAN general manager, public affairs, confirmed his identity to TheCable on Saturday.

She said an investigation to ascertain the remote and immediate causes of the incident had commenced. Other affected officers have also been replaced.

Yakubu said the current arrangement was aimed at ensuring an efficient and thorough investigation towards the recovery and sustenance of the airport's proactive security integrity.

Lagos Airport has had a number of security issues in the past, including thefts from aircraft cargo holds while the airplanes were in use.

This newspaper learnt that airport authorities have since brought the situation under control.
