Theresa May fights back tears in her Commons farewell as Prime Minister”

In his acceptance speech on Tuesday, Johnson said he wants to unite Britain and "get Brexit done" by the delayed European Union exit date of October 31, with or without a deal.

May herself survived a confidence vote in December but after her Brexit deal was roundly rejected by parliament three times, even after she promised to go if it was passed, she bowed to pressure from her lawmakers to let someone else take over.

During her final PMQs in Parliament, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn paid tribute to her "sense of public duty".

But the niceties did not last long, as he listed services that he said had declined during her time as leader - including an increase in child poverty, higher use of food banks and a decrease in police numbers.

Mrs May also said that she had been told she had answered 4,500 questions over 140 hours in the House, "more than I might have expected".

There was still time for Mrs May to get her own back though.

But she did join him in his praise for MPs' husbands, wives and partners, which he called the "unsung heroes".

After listing what she felt were her accomplishments, she said: "At its heart, politics isn't about exchanges across these despatch boxes, nor about eloquent speeches or media headlines".

Theresa May has officially stepped down as Prime Minister.

Johnson's office said his government would be a "cabinet for modern Britain" with more women and a record number of ministers from ethnic minorities - a sign that he hopes to move beyond the largely white, male and Conservative members who chose him as their leader.

When Mrs May left Downing Street today, she said serving as Prime Minister has been the "greatest honour".

He promised in a victory speech Tuesday to deliver Brexit "in a new spirit of can-do".

After beating Jeremy Hunt, he said: "We are going to energise the country".
