Thunderstorm warning issued as Preston swelters in heatwave

Thunderstorm warning issued as Preston swelters in heatwave”

The highest overnight average temperature ever seen in the United Kingdom was 23.3C (73.94F) in July 1948.

"That's why we sometimes have to put speed restrictions on to prevent our rails - that can be over 20 degrees hotter than air temperatures - from buckling, which can derail a train and cause huge delays". Although the main concentration of the hot weather will be in central and south-eastern England, it could reach the high 20s in parts of Scotland, where most schools broke up earlier this month.

"Scattered thunderstorms are expected to affect parts of south-west and southern England this evening, moving north quickly across the United Kingdom overnight, clearing Scotland and eastern England by mid-morning on Wednesday".

A national thunderstorm warning was put in place and many social media users shared their pictures and videos of the weather event.

The Met Office released the "yellow" alert this morning, with thunder and lightning due to begin at 6pm until 9am tomorrow morning. Public Health England has also renewed warnings about the heat, urging people to keep hydrated, find shade and take protection against the sun.

BRITAIN will be a tale of two halves tomorrow - with record-breaking temperatures and sunshine forecast for the east and rain in the west.

Temperatures in London are expected to reach 39°C on Thursday, which would pass the current record for a day in July - 36.7°C - recorded at Heathrow Airport in 2015.

Mr Petagna said "anywhere could see some thundery showers".

Southeastern said it would be running a "significantly reduced service" on Thursday.

Animal welfare charity Dogs Trust has also warned owners not to leave their pets in hot cars as it can prove fatal.

He said: "The temperatures will still be in the 20Cs so still fairly sunny but this part of England will be the coolest out of the rest".

Earlier this week, an American bulldog received treatment after his body temperature soared to a life-threatening 42.2C in Glasgow.
