Twelve killed in rebel attacks in Congo's Ebola outbreak region

Twelve killed in rebel attacks in Congo's Ebola outbreak region”

According to the BBC, the minister, in his resignation letter, condemned a decision by President Felix Tshisekedi to replace him as the head of the Ebola response team.

As of Monday, the death toll from the Ebola virus in Democratic Republic of Congo stood at 1,743, with 10 of 14 newly confirmed cases in the hotspot of Beni that bring the total caseload to 2,498.

It was not immediately clear which actors he was referring to, but global donors like the World Health Organization and medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres have publicly called for the use of the second vaccine.

Congo's minister of health resisted the characterization of the outbreak as a health emergency.

"Strong pressure has been exerted for several months to roll out a new experiment in the DR Congo", he wrote.

The DRC, since August past year, has been witnessing an outbreak of Ebola. World Health Organization (WHO) also marked the largest outbreak of Ebola in 2014-15, an incidence which affected 28,616 people and took life of another 11,310 people.

The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has urged countries in the region to enhance disease surveillance at ports of entry and at health facilities.

Goma has a population of 2 million people, and is situated near the Rwandan border.

The presence of an Islamist militant group, along with a patchwork of other violent militias and armed criminal bands, has severely hampered efforts to contain the world's second-worst Ebola epidemic on record.

The money sought is on top of the $114 million contributed since August and will largely support the massive scale up of dozens of teams administering protective vaccines to vulnerable Congolese communities, undertaking disease surveillance and reporting, and bolstering capacity at treatment centers, said Margaret Harris, a World Health Organization spokeswoman, in a telephone interview Tuesday. WHO July 16 said the man had died and health workers were scrambling to trace dozens of his contacts, including those who had traveled on the same bus.

The urgent call was made by the AU's Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) and the WHO Regional Office for Africa in a statement issued Tuesday, as they reiterated the need for all AU member countries to adhere to recommendations, emphasizing against possible restrictions on travel and trade with the Ebola-affected countries.

The response to the most recent outbreak has been complicated by sporadic assaults on well-being staff, and conspiracy theories concerning the current vaccine.

The vaccine was developed during the epidemic in West Africa and has been available throughout the latest outbreak.
