World Bank deploys $300 mn to DR Congo to contain Ebola outbreak

World Bank deploys $300 mn to DR Congo to contain Ebola outbreak”

Dr. Oly Ilunga, in his resignation letter addressed to the Congolese president, denounced what he calls interference in the management of the response to the Ebola epidemic.

"As in any war, because that is what this is, there can not be several centres of decision-making for risk of creating confusion", he said.

He also condemned "strong pressure exercised in recent months" to use a new Ebola vaccine advocated by some aid agencies and donors.

"No vaccine is flawless, but it appears to be effective in preventing exposed people from getting infected", commented Englund with regards to Ebola virus vaccine.

"We need to work together in solidarity with the DRC to end this outbreak and build a better health system".

Unfortunately, the country is yet to contain the spread of the disease. The town sits on the Rwandan border.

Ebola has killed more than 1,700 and last week the World Health Organisation declared it an worldwide health emergency.

Having had a plan in place previously, with the ebola outbreak reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo being deemed "a public health emergency of global concern", the Ministry of Health and Wellness in Barbados is reviewing and updating its Ebola Plan to ensure that authorities are able to respond effectively, if the need arises.

"There should be no requirement of certificates of Ebola vaccination for any movement across borders or for issuance of visas, as there is now no licensed vaccine against Ebola", the joint statement read. It is indeed the second largest Ebola outbreak in Africa: statistics have shown that more than 2,500 people have been infected, while two-thirds of them have lost their lives.

It also affected Nigeria when a passenger from Liberia "imported" the disease into the country.

While the vaccine is in fact 97% effective, it is important to note that not everybody is vaccinated.

The AU, which had previously deployed the AVoHC in West Africa to respond to the outbreak back in 2014 to 2015, said that the AVoHC "will be very useful in the current outbreak".
