The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Discontinues Issuing Travel Visas for the DRC

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Discontinues Issuing Travel Visas for the DRC”

The Hajj is an annual religious pilgrimage to Mecca undertaken each year by 2-3 million people.

The new decision affects anyone coming from Congo, including non-citizens.

The decision to convene a resource mobilization forum was made due to the "seriousness of health, economic and security threat that the ongoing Ebola virus disease outbreak emergency poses to the continent", according to the AU.

The African Union (AU) on Friday revealed that it will convene a fundraising forum of African private sector and donors to support the ongoing response against the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The CDC is closely monitoring and, if necessary, verify travel and trade measures in relation to this Ebola ongoing event.

Meanwhile, the United Nations said on Friday that DRC's new Ebola response coordinator is considering the use of a second vaccine after the health minister resigned over the controversial issue.

Since the Ebola outbreak in DRC previous year, there have been 2526 confirmed cases, 94 probable cases, 2620 total cases and 1762 deaths as of 24 July 24 according to figures from WHO.

Saudi Arabia also partially shuttered its borders to travellers amid fears over Ebola during the world's deadliest ever eruption of the virus, which killed more than 11,300 people as it surged through West Africa during 2014-2016.

A vaccine by drugmaker Merck is being widely used in the affected provinces of Ituri and North Kivu.

Over the next six months, WFP will almost double its food assistance and nutritional support to 440,000 Ebola-affected people in DR Congo, Mr. Verhoosel announced, adding that this would include "primarily contacts of victims and their families, as well as confirmed and suspected cases".

World Health Organization now has over 600 staff in the field, with 200,000 person-days spent in the field in total, but emergencies chief Mike Ryan told reporters that many agencies could redouble their efforts and deploy more people in the field.

"But our colleagues in CDC have provided wonderful support, both in DRC, in the surrounding countries, here in Geneva, in our operation centres in backstopping and providing high-level technical assistance to the response", Ryan said.
