Huawei and Google Have a Long History of Partnership: Media Report”

A report from The alleges that before the USA government restricted Huawei's access to US tech firms, the company was working alongside Google to develop a Huawei-branded smart speaker.

Before the U.S. action, Huawei's plan was to unveil the new speaker at the IFA show in Berlin this September, the report said.

Huawei's broadening its consumer electronics offerings, with laptops on the rise and word that the company will get into the TV space (it has via its Honor sub-brand), so it won't come as much of a surprise that the company is/was/shouldbe/mightbe/couldhavebeen/mightstill ‍♂️ collaborate with the a big G on an Assistant-powered speaker. Citing a Huawei employee, it was revealed that both the companies were working more closely than before and the product was nearly ready. And even if it were, and Huawei was able to finish the device and ultimately sell it online in the USA, it would likely meet with skepticism given how much the ban is likely to have tarnished the brand in many consumers' minds. There are already more smart speakers on the market than most users are even aware of, and they all seem to share similar privacy issues. Huawei released its first Android smartphone in 2009 in the "Ascend" series. Baidu, Xiaomi, and Alibaba were among the top smart speaker producers along with Amazon and Google. In 2018, it registered a revenue of $105 billion. President Trump signed an executive order adding Huawei and 70 of its affiliates on the "Entity List" or firms deemed threats to national security, effectively prohibiting the firm from buying USA technology, and components. The ban went into effect on May 17. Not much is known about what the final product would have been or how it would have worked - but it was expected to debut at the IFA trade show in Berlin in September. He added that the trade restrictions would cost the company $30 billion this year and next. Central Intelligence Agency flagged Huawei for allegedly receiving funding from intelligence organizations connected with the Chinese government.

Huawei was also planning to come up with its own new generation smart speaker which would be using Google Assistant but unfortunately, it ended up just here.

Google would have benefitted from the arrangement behind this device, given that it would have introduced more consumers to its Google Assistant whose usage of it would train it to keep getting better at various tasks and more useful overall. In reality, phone hacking is a far more likely threat than smart speaker eavesdropping, but for the public the "always listening" threat is a lot more tangible.
