This Country Planted 353M Trees -in Half a Day”

India now holds the world record for the most trees planted in a single day after 800,000 volunteers planted more than 50 million trees in 2016, the BBC reports. Over 350 million seedlings were planted creating a new world record!

Getahun Mekuria, Ethiopia's minister of innovation and technology, said 353,633,660 seedlings were planted in 12 hours on Monday.

Understanding the importance of trees, the Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has initiated the Green Legacy project in the African country.

According to reports, Ethiopia planted over 353 million trees in 12 hours.

According Farm Africa, an organisation involved in Ethiopian forest management, less than 4 per cent of the country's land is now forested, a sharp decline from around 30 per cent at the end of the 19th century.

"Today Ethiopia is set in our attempt to break the world record together for a green legacy", the prime minister's office wrote on Twitter Monday morning.

The landlocked country is also suffering from the effects of climate crisis, with land degradation, soil erosion, deforestation, and recurrent droughts and flooding exacerbated by agriculture.

"As a bus driver, with frequent trips across the country, I have witnessed the extent of deforestation in different parts of Ethiopia".

India set a tree planting record in 2017, adding 66 million trees to the country. Their research on restoring forests to reduce the levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere showed that if we plant 1 trillion trees on Earth, we could say goodbye to global warming.

The report said that over the decades, those new trees could suck up almost 750 billion tonnes of heat-trapping carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
