The pilot of a U.S. Navy F/A-18E Super Hornet is missing after the aircraft crashed in California's Death Valley National Park at approximately 9:50 a.m. local time on Wednesday. "The cause of the crash is now under investigation", spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr.

A rescue effort is now underway, a spokesperson for the Navy Joint Strike Fighter Wing said, while the number of pilots involved remains unclear.

U.S. Naval Air Forces tweeted the crash happened during a "routine training flight".

Officials said several were injured in the Death Valley National Park as a result of the incident.

The base is located some 150 miles north of Los Angeles, according to its website, and is located in the Western Mojave Desert region of California. There are reports of visitors at the site with minor injuries due to the crash.

KABC-TV spoke to tourists who said they were treated for minor burns and cuts from flying fragments after the plane crashed and exploded.

Training flights are nearly a daily feature with jets thundering below the rim of the canyon and passing so close viewers can see the pilots' facial expressions.

Cassell said he first heard the roar of the jets, and then saw a cloud of smoke. Taylor said the area also provides a parking lot and a restroom.
