Here’s why Netflix wants access to your physical activity on Android”

Streaming service Netflix has started requesting physical activity permission for its app on Android, something that came to light after a security researcher tweeted about it. We're assuming the corporate is analyzing if there's a correlation between customers who're moving from one place to another and the video stream quality throughout that movement.

"We are continually testing ways to give our members a better experience", Netflix said. Netflix confirmed that it's collecting physical activity data as a part of a test. Further, Netflix states that only some accounts are being tested, and that they are not now planning to roll it out on a bigger scale. But Netflix appears to be taking advantage of a new feature in Android Q that lets apps detect when a phone is in motion, as The Next Web points out. It's rather odd that a streaming video service would want to know whether you're walking or running. With Android Q update, Google allows developers to request to obtain access to a user's physical activity data.

Of course, not everyone may feel comfortable letting Netflix access such data. However, if that is the case, it's not clear how Netflix would be able to do anything about this, as it doesn't control smartphone connection hardware nor does it control cell towers. This is just speculation though, as Netflix hasn't explained the specifics of what it's doing with activity data during this test.

Well, it seems soon "Netflix and Chill" phrase would be rolled out.

We recently heard about Netflix and YouTube support coming to Tesla cars. Now that users will have the opportunity and the means to easily watch content on the move, Netflix is testing a quirky new feature.
