Messi receives three-month ban for his rant against Conmebol

Messi receives three-month ban for his rant against Conmebol”

He has also been fined $50,000 by CONMEBOL and will miss Argentina's friendly encounters vs Chile, Mexico and Germany.

Conmebol announced on Friday that Lionel Messi has been hit with a three-month suspension from global football for his comments made during the Copa America, as well as receiving a 50,000 dollar fine.

Argentina were denied two penalty claims in their 2-0 semi-final defeat to the hosts, after which Messi claimed Brazil were "managing a lot in Conmebol these days".

Argentina are due to face Chile in a friendly match in Los Angeles on September 5 followed by another friendly with Mexico in San Antonio five days later.

It had seemed that the one-game suspension for the red would be all Messi was given, though CONMEBOL did release a statement describing his comments as "unacceptable" and representing "a lack of respect".

Messi is already suspended from the first match of the South American World Cup qualifiers next March because of the apparently undeserved red card he received against Chile.

Messi was shown a red card in the 37th minute against Chile, following a clash with Gary Medel, who was also dismissed.

"Corruption and the referees are preventing people from enjoying the football and they're ruining it a bit", Messi said.

'I always tell the truth and I'm honest, that is what keeps me calm if what I say has repercussions that is not my business'.

Messi isn't a player used to being suspended, having never been sent off in a competitive game for his club Barcelona.
