Donald Trump To Visit El Paso Tomorrow Following Mass Shooting: Mayor”

In his statement - one of only a couple of public proclamations he's made since leaving office in early 2017 - the former two-term Democratic president said he and former first lady Michelle Obama are grieving with all the families affected by the massacre in El Paso and another mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio that killed nine people. He compared white supremacist websites to terrorist groups like ISIS and called on law enforcement and internet platforms to reduce the influence of hate groups.

Former President Barack Obama, pictured at a conference in Berlin in April, tweeted Monday that Americans should reject language of "fear and hatred" from US leaders.

He posted a statement on social media in response to 31 people being killed in the dual incidents in El Paso and Dayton.

"These sinister ideologies must be defeated", he said in remarks at the White House.

The deadly rampage in this predominately Latino border city is being treated as an act of domestic terrorism by the Justice Department and a potential hate crime by federal investigators, who are probing a racist, anti-immigrant document purportedly authored by the suspect. Repugnant anti-immigrant rhetoric and white nationalism simply do not belong here.

Trump has been accused by his opponents of helping to stir up resentment against ethnic minority groups with his divisive rhetoric, and some locals in El Paso - which has a mainly Hispanic population - have said that the president would not be welcome.

Such language, Obama said, "has no place in our politics and our public life".

Candles burn as part of a memorial at the scene of Sunday morning's mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, U.S. August 5, 2019. While he cited "racist hate" in the manifesto, he blamed the shootings on mental illness, violent video games and the internet.

He also said the country needs to reform mental health laws to identify disturbed people as well as work with social media companies to detect possible mass shooters.

The measure was voted on in the Senate six years ago during a failed attempt to toughen USA gun laws in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012, that took the lives of 20 children and seven adults.
