Cloudflare terminates service to 8chan after recent U.S. shootings”

The horrific, back-to-back shootings that took place in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio over the weekend in the United States appear to share something in common: inspiration from 8chan.

An 8chan administrator announced early Monday that it would be relaunching the site using the Canadian cybersecurity company BitMitigate as a replacement for the online services firm Cloudflare.

"We reluctantly tolerate content that we find reprehensible, but we draw the line at platforms that have demonstrated they directly inspire tragic events and are lawless by design", Prince said.

Following Cloudflare's decision, 8chan found a replacement provider, Voxility, but that company pulled its services shortly after. Multiple hacktivists have announced online plans to attack the site after 12:00am PT on Sunday, when Cloudflare said it would drop the site from its servers.

In a blog post, Cloudflare's CEO Matthew Prince described the site as a "cesspool of hate", adding that the service will be terminated at midnight Sunday Pacific Time (0700 GMT). The message board suffered intermittent outages after Cloudflare cut its services.

8chan lets users post photos and texts about any topic without having to register on the site, according to an FAQ on the site. Back in 2018, Epik gave room to Gab, a social network that is laced with people termed anti-Semitic, hate speech supporters and more. When Voxility realized 8chan traffic was moving through its network, Epik got the boot, preventing 8chan from getting back online.

"We have not made a definitive decision about whether to provide DDoS mitigation or Content Delivery services for them". Epik also owns the security company BitMitigate, whose clients include the Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi and white supremacist site. "In the case of the El Paso shooting, the suspected terrorist gunman appears to have been inspired by the forum website known as 8chan", he explained, in the post. "Even if a social media company was able to report to us "this terrorist has put a manifesto" or 'this person has put up a thing criticizing various ethnic groups, ' that's not something we can investigate ... exclusively on the basis of that information", Wiegmann stated.

While speaking about this weekend's pair of mass shootings, President Donald Trump on Monday referenced one of the shooter's online activities, and called for better regulation of social media. Suspects in attacks on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, and a synagogue in Poway, California, also are believed to have posted hateful manifestos on the site. "It does nothing to address why mass shootings occur". "Even after these bad crimes and the connection the 8chan forum has to them, I don't see much of a likelihood of a pretty serious debate about how the companies should be regulated". The company's decision to dump the white nationalist site Daily Stormer two years ago did not lead to its demise, but on the contrary, only fired up its base, he noted.

"There is probably disgusting content that's being hosted by its clients in other parts of the world", he said, "but is it applying the same measures there?"

Following Cloudflare's ban, the site was subsequentially banned and kicked off other platforms as well, but it has not gone down for good, continuing to operate to this day, albeit with some inconveniences and downtimes as it constantly switched web hosting providers and domain name registrars.
