Judicial Watch Files Lawsuit Against California’s Tax Return Law Directed at Trump”

The Presidential Tax Transparency and Accountability Act, which was signed into law on July 30, requires presidential candidates to turn over their tax returns for the past five years in order to be on their party's primary ballot in the state.

California will hold its 2020 presidential primary on March 3.

"These are extraordinary times and states have a legal and moral duty to do everything in their power to ensure leaders seeking the highest offices meet minimal standards, and to restore public confidence". The signing statement said in part that "the disclosure required by this bill will shed light on conflicts of interest, self-dealing, or influence from domestic and foreign business interest".

The Trump campaign and the Republican Party are suing California over a new law requiring presidential candidates to release their tax returns. The president sued to block the NY law, and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has refused to hand Trump's returns over to the Ways and Means Committee.

"If such a law is upheld as constitutional, we might see a race to the bottom whereby other states enact ballot access requirements, such as a requirement for candidates to produce a birth certificate, which could affect which candidates can run in which states". "In their rush to join this crusade, California Democrats have run afoul of these restrictions on State power over federal elections".

Sighting similar reasons to the Judicial Watch lawsuit, Former California Gov. California's legislature passed a similar bill previous year but it was vetoed by then-Governor Jerry Brown, who believed it would run afoul of the Constitution.

President Trump's personal attorney, Jay Sekulow, blasted the law as "flagrantly illegal".

Newsom is not the only official who has taken legal action against Trump for disclosure of his tax returns.

The president also sued to block the NY law, and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin has refused to hand Trump's returns over to the Ways and Means Committee. It lists four California voters as plaintiffs, including two registered as Republicans, one registered as a Democrat and one registered as an independent.

One of the suits contends California's law is "a naked political attack against the sitting President of the United States".

The law adds an "unconstitutional qualification" to the fixed set of qualifications for the presidency set forward in the Constitution and violates the First Amendment, Trump's lawyer William Consovoy argued in the lawsuit filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of California.

Sure enough, now that the bill has been signed into law, President Trump and the Republican National Committee are bringin' the lawsuits.
