Gove says Britain deeply saddened by European Union refusing to negotiate on Brexit”

The Irish finance minister has said the relationship between the United Kingdom and Ireland would "fundamentally change" in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Donohoe, who met British Chancellor Sajid Javid in London yesterday, said both had fully outlined their respective positions.

"Were that to happen - which it would in the event of a no-deal Brexit - it would fundamentally change the relationship that is there".

Johnson, who took over as prime minister two weeks ago, has taken a hard line with the European Union, demanding that it show willingness to change the divorce deal it agreed with his predecessor before negotiations can restart to secure Britain's smooth departure from the bloc.

But the United Kingdom has also set down red lines for talks including negotiation over the backstop, which could keep Britain close to the European Union to prevent a controversial hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Ireland's prime minister urged Britain and the European Union on Tuesday (Aug 6) to use the time until Brexit, set for October 31, to explore alternative arrangements as part of a joint political declaration on their future relationship.

He added: "I believe that the consequences of that are well understood by us in Ireland and this is the reason why over the last number of weeks we have published our latest contingency plan which has laid out all of the different consequences that a no-deal Brexit could cause and all of the actions we will take, and are taking, to deal with those issues". "We're going to have to work through it", he added.

While Ireland has been cutting its reliance on the British market in recent years, the proportion of trade is far higher if Ireland's raft of foreign-owned firms are excluded, with employment-heavy industries in rural areas among the most reliant on trade across the Irish Sea.

"There are many ways by which a no-deal can be avoided".

"If that risk does develop and we believe it is likely, we will have to radically reset expectations regarding what this and future budgets will be able to do", Donohoe told Ireland's Newstalk radio station.
