Dominic Thiem Ends Denis Shapovalov Hopes of Winning the Rogers Cup

Dominic Thiem Ends Denis Shapovalov Hopes of Winning the Rogers Cup”

Nadal was playing his first match since losing to Roger Federer in the semifinals at Wimbledon and said he was happy to pass his first test on hard court.

Now ranked 31st in the world, the 20-year-old was the darling of the 2017 tournament in Montreal when he upset Nadal on the way to making the semi-finals. They last met in Monte Carlo earlier this year with Nadal winning a close first set in a tie-breaker and a comfortable second set.

In his match against Daniel Evans of Britain, Nadal ultimately saved two set points in a tiebreaker and went on to win 7-6 (6), 6-4.

As was expected, Nadal broke at the beginning of the second set with another forehand victor, confirming the break before the rain sent them off the court for two hours, with Evans saving a break point in game five and breaking back in the next game after a huge forehand error from Rafa to level the score at 3-3.

The Canadian did not make the same mistake in the second, converting his only chance of the set in the sixth game, and serving it out, 6-3, to level after a high-paced hour and a quarter.

6-4 in a second-round match disrupted by rain in Montreal, Canada.

Nadal had lost only one of his previous 75 matches after winning the first set - against Kyrgios in Acapulco this year - and it looked ominous when he broke Evans in the first game of the second set. Pella beat Moldova's Radu Albot, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (2). Dominic Thiem has been in outstanding form having won the Austrian Open last week.

He was playing for the first time since losing a Wimbledon semi-final to Roger Federer a month ago. "Against Denis, it was special because he's a local hero". Hurkacz improved to 4-4 against Top 10 opponents this year and his win over Tsitsipas represented his third Top 10 win at a hard-court ATP Masters 1000 event. "All the crowd was supporting him, so it was tough".

No. 17 Milos Raonic retired against fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime after the pair had split the first two sets.

British number one Kyle Edmund is also out after a 59-minute, 6-3 6-0 defeat by Russian eighth seed Daniil Medvedev.

Thiem, who before this week had never won a match in five attempts in Canada, had his hands full against 14th-seeded Cilic but did well to save all nine break points he faced while relying on a steady stream of groundstroke winners. Next, he will face Richard Gasquet, who took out fifth seed Kei Nishikori 6-7 (6), 6-2, 7-6 (4), and was backed by 11 aces and five service breaks.

Evans boldly employed serve and volley tactics to save both and, after a rain delay lasting nearly half an hour, dominated the early part of the tie-break to earn two set points.

Spain s 10th seed Robert Bautista Agut advanced while number 12 John Isner was sent out in straight sets.
