Miami Dolphins' Kenny Stills insists Stephen Ross criticism isn't political

Miami Dolphins' Kenny Stills insists Stephen Ross criticism isn't political”

Not long after news came on Wednesday that Ross was hosting the fundraiser, Stills tweeted a screen grab from the RISE (Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality) website and its mission statement, which says in part that it is working "to eliminate racial discrimination, champion social justice and improve racial relations". "If you're saying you're going to be about something, let's be about it". I don't have any hard feelings toward him.

The 27-year-old Stills, a New Orleans Saints draft pick in 2013 who has been with the Dolphins since 2015, said he was disappointed but not surprised to learn Ross' decision to raise money for Trump.

"You can't have a non-profit with this mission statement then open your doors to Trump", Stills wrote on Twitter.

Stills said he didn't report them to police.

Stills said he hasn't spoken to Ross since the tweet but plans to do so "at some point". I respect that. My conversation with Kenny, I asked him why he didn't talk to the owner, why he didn't talk to Steve first before putting something out? There has to be more communication, more conversation, more. just more communication if we really want to make change. "And I wish he would have done that".

"SoulCycle in no way endorses the political fundraising event being held later this week", SoulCycle CEO Melanie Whelan said, adding: "Mr. Ross is a passive investor and is not involved in the management of SoulCycle". "It just doesn't align to be running a nonprofit focused on equality and talking about sports and equality and then to be holding a fundraiser for a man that we know isn't standing up for that same cause or championing that same cause". It's real. Everything that I do has been real from the very beginning, and it's going to continue to be that way.

On Thursday, Stills doubled down on that argument. "It's important to me that the work that we're doing isn't just lip service".

Then Stills revealed that the death threats he received at the height of the kneeling controversy in 2017 have returned. In a statement issued early Wednesday evening, Ross said he has been friends with Trump for 40 years, and that while they agree on some things, "we strongly disagree on many others" and that he has never been "bashful" about expressing his opinions to the president.

Right, that's the other question - not just "How extensive will the boycotting be?" but "How much will it backfire, not only by deepening the siege mentality on the right but by alienating centrists who may find all the boycott calls too draconian?" "While some prefer to sit outside of the process and criticize, I prefer to engage directly and support the things I deeply care about".

"Someone has to have enough courage to let him know he can't play both sides of this..."

Stills, an ally of former quarterback Colin Kaepernick, has protested racial injustice and economic inequality by kneeling during the national anthem the past three seasons. It's never been about politics. He knelt during the anthem Thursday night.

In addition, Kenny Stills was the first player to join New England Patriot Michael Bennett in backing out of a trip of National Football League players to Israel, after Bennett published a letter linking the treatment of Palestinians by the Israeli Defense Forces to the oppression of black people by police in the United States.
