United Kingdom hit by serious power failure

A tweet said: "The power network has failed in the large parts of London and the South East".

Almost a million customers faced blackouts late on Friday afternoon after what the National Grid Electricity System Operator said were issues with two generators, which were now resolved.

Transport For London (TFL) confirmed that service on the London Underground's Victoria Line is suspended, and trains in and out of the capital have been hit with delays and cancelations.

National Grid, which owns the electricity transmission system in England and Wales, said there had been "issues" with two power generators and the problems have now been resolved.

Major power failures have been reported across large areas of the United Kingdom, affecting homes and transport networks.

Radio Clyde News said that "at least 30 sets of traffic lights are out across Glasgow after a number of power spikes caused by the bad weather".

In a statement, National Grid said: "Even though these events are outside of our control, we have plans in place to respond and the system operated as planned by disconnecting an isolated portion of electricity demand".

Police officers could be forced to man busy junctions where traffic lights have been shut down. We suspect this has been caused by an electrical supply problem.

Transport for London have confirmed that parts of the tube network, as well as some traffic lights have been impacted by the blackout. "We're just assessing how many traffic signals are out".

Western Power Distribution shared a similar message, and said they are in the process of restoring power to customers. One social media user said it was "like GTA out here" as a result.

"Grand Central, Hull Trains and LNER services to and from London Kings Cross may be cancelled or delayed by up to 60 minutes".

A Network Rail spokeswoman said a power surge on the National Grid meant power was lost to all signalling over a wide area, including Newport, Gloucester, Ashford, Bristol, Eastbourne, Hastings, Three Bridges and Exeter.

There were power outages reported at Newcastle airport and in Cheshire, police tweeted they were aware of an outage in the Ellesmere Port area, including in Little Sutton and Great Sutton.

"All trains were stopped while our back-up signalling system started up", she said.
