18 dead, 14 missing after super typhoon slams China”

More than a million people were evacuated from their homes ahead of the storm, which slammed into eastern China early Saturday, bringing torrential rain and heavy winds that knocked out power and downed thousands of trees, state media reported.

Typhoon Lekima made landfall early on Saturday morning in the eastern province of Zhejiang with maximum winds of 187 km (116 miles) per hour, although it had weakened from its earlier designation as a "super" typhoon, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled and a million people were evacuated from their homes as the third-largest typhoon on record in China hit the east of the country, state-run China Central Television (CCTV) reported on Saturday.

As it barreled inland, it caused a natural dam to collapse, leading to the deadly landslide which took place around 130km north of the coastal city of Wenzhou, CCTV reported. The landslide blocked a river, causing a lake to form.

China's National Meteorological Center issued an orange alert for Typhoon Lekima along with an orange alert for rainstorm early Saturday, according to statements on the center's website.

Authorities ordered the evacuation of more than 800,000 people from Zhejiang province and a further 250,000 from Shanghai.

The storm has also sparked major disruptions in Taiwan, forcing the autonomous island to close schools and ground flights Friday. Almost three million households suffered power blackouts due to fallen electricity lines.

It added more than 200 houses collapsed and 3,200 were damaged.

Shanghai Disneyland was also closed for the first time since the amusement park opened in 2016.

State TV said 3,023 flights in Shanghai, Hangzhou and other cities and some train services were cancelled.

The storm had been gradually weakening through the day as it moved northward at 15km/h, Xinhua reported, citing the weather bureau.

Almost 200 trains through the city of Jinan in Shandong province were also suspended until Monday, Xinhua reported.
