American Kenin sweeps past Svitolina for women's last four at Rogers Cup

American Kenin sweeps past Svitolina for women's last four at Rogers Cup”

Pliskova, number one for eight weeks in 2017, needed to win the tournament to regain top spot but lost 6-0 2-6 6-4 to Canadian teenager Bianca Andreescu.

"In the third set I told myself, 'Go big or go home, '" Andreescu said.

Instead, the home-nation heroine advanced to a Saturday matchup against American Sofia Kenin, who defeated Ukraine sixth seed Elina Svitolina 7-6 (7/2), 6-4.

The Mississauga, Ont., teen looked to be out of the tournament on Wednesday - facing a 5-3 deficit in the third set of her late afternoon match against Kasatkina - but rallied back by winning four straight games to advance to the third round. "I just went out there and I never gave up because it's not over until it's over".

Kenin, who won her first two WTA singles titles this year in Hobart and Mallorca, improves to 4-0 in quarterfinal matches on tour in 2019. "I know that can't be helped when I'm playing against her".

Making matters worse was that Friday's victory was Andreescu's fourth consecutive three-set match. "It's nice to get back in the rhythm of things", Andreescu said. "My team too, I'm so sorry guys for putting you through all of that". Andreescu hopes to make her third career final appearance, all of which have taken place this year.

Kenin, ranked No. 29, had knocked off the top-ranked Ashleigh Barty on Tuesday to reach the third round. "I show no mercy no matter who I play, and I think that's showing a lot", said Andreescu. Kenin got 73 percent of her first serves in play and saved nine of her 11 break points.

Pliskova beat Kontaveit in two sets after taking three against American Alison Riske on Wednesday.

"She's a very good player".

Andreescu answered with an ace of her own to tie it up 4-4, then won another game when Pliskova's return on a break point was well past the baseline.

"We haven't played since NY which was a really good match for her and I just wanted to come out and try to win a set this time because she's beaten me twice so I just wanted to do the best I could today", Williams said in an on-court interview.

Pliskova put her return into the net on match point, sending Andreescu on to the semifinals.

Czech 21-year-old Bouzkova's breakout run in Toronto will carry into the weekend after Halep, who had been complaining about her Achilles all week, retired from their match.

In the evening matches, American Serena Williams faced Naomi Osaka of Japan and qualifier Marie Bouzkova, also from the Czech Republic, played Simona Halep of Romania.
