'Elites' hunting 'deplorables'!? Hollywood studio yanks gory movie ads after mass shootings

'Elites' hunting 'deplorables'!? Hollywood studio yanks gory movie ads after mass shootings”

But I'm struggling to imagine how it's healthy or constructive to foist a film on the American audience that depicts crudely stereotyped liberals and conservatives engaged in a literal culture war, replete with gratuitous red-on-blue violence.

Universal Pictures pulled TV and online advertisements for "The Hunt", according to The Hollywood Reporter. A Wednesday article in The Hollywood Reporter spotlighted internal deliberations over the movie, which stars Hilary Swank and is slated for release on September 27.

After the three recent deadly massacres (where 34 people died in El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and Gilroy, California) Universal is re-evaluating how to promote the film.

According to the Hollywood trade publication, characters in the film refer to the victims as "deplorables", which is what Hillary Clinton infamously dubbed Trump supporters during the 2016 election.

A high-level executive reportedly said the project is considered a satire "addressing an issue of great social importance". At least The Hunt's coming up.

Do we really need fictional violence-in the form of liberal elites literally hunting conservatives, no less-to help process "what a stupid, insane world we live in"? While one Universal insider claimed the studio was standing by producer Jason Blum, who has reliably turned out successful films including the "Purge" series and "Get Out", they characterized the situation as "fluid" and warned things could change "if people think we're being exploitative rather than opinionated". 'In light of the horrific [recent shootings], is this not the most craven, irresponsible, unsafe exploitation?' In the film's few marketing materials that have aired, stars such as Betty Gilpin and Ike Barinholtz can be seen brandishing assault rifles and pistols as they take on a group of would-be hunters.

Universal Pictures declined further comment on Thursday.
