Giants DFA 2B Panik in wake of Gennett trade

Giants DFA 2B Panik in wake of Gennett trade”

The San Francisco Giants designated second baseman Joe Panik for assignment Tuesday, no longer needing him to play regularly with the acquisition of Scooter Gennett at the trade deadline. I am forever grateful for the Giants taking the chance on me and allowing me to live out my life long dream.

The native New Yorker and St. John's product is hitting.235/.310/.317 with three home runs and 27 RBIs in 103 games. He'll be playing somewhere, and I'll always be pulling for Joe.

According to Kerry Crowley of the San Jose Mercury News, the Giants are still on the hook for the remainder of the $3.8 million salary Panik is slated to earn this season - about $1.12 million. "But I think he's ready to see what's on the other side right now".

Remember: the Major League Baseball has eliminated August trades, meaning that the Giants are likely hoping that someone picks Panik up off waivers in order to claim the remainder of his salary.

The Mets aren't entirely out of options yet to replace Robinson Cano.

Bochy continued about what this move could mean for the now-former Giants second baseman.

Farhan Zaidi, the team's president of baseball operations, called Panik "a winning ballplayer", and one of his personal favorites. Panik was a first-round selection of the Giants in 2011, and batted.305 as a rookie in 2014.

Either way, Panik will be eligible for arbitration one final time in the 2020 season. Along the way, he made one of the most spectacular plays in World Series history with his diving stop and glove flip that led to a double play in Game 7.

Panik would go on to take a pretty big step back in 2016, as he slashed.239/.315/.379 with 10 homers and 62 RBI over 526 trips to the dish, but the next season, he bounced back, slashing.288/.347/.421 with 10 home runs and 53 RBI over 573 plate appearances. A claiming club will only be required to pay Panik the prorated major league minimum, which would save the Giants about $200,000.
